50 years ago

July 29, 1960

Both Echuca and South Bendigo will be without their coaches when they meet in an important game _ for South Bendigo _ at the Queen Elizabeth Oval tomorrow. Echuca coach, Eric Butler, has been advised to rest an injured knee this week, while Ron Robertson is also suffering from a knee injury and could be out for the rest of the season.

Plans for the major improvements at the Gunbower Recreation Reserve were discussed at a meeting last Sunday convened by the trustees of the reserve and attended by representatives of sporting organisations. The meeting decided to appeal to the public for money to allow the project to be proceeded with.

July 31, 1985

There is still no end in sight to the saga of the proposed new Murray bridges at Echuca. The saga, now nearly 21 years old, has continued to be a drawn out affair since two Victorian Government departments put a freeze on planning last December.

I would appreciate the support once again of the citizens of Echuca in the forthcoming elections. I have the time to devote to the city and feel I still have plenty to contribute.

Today marks the end of an era of one of Echuca's landmarks _ the 121-year-old Echuca Post office in Hare St. The historic building, the city's most prominent piece of architecture, closes this evening to make way for the new post office at 226 Pakenham St.

Between 5000 and 6000 people flocked to Echuca's Victoria Park on Tuesday evening for the Olympic Torch relay celebration. Streets were busy again on Wednesday morning as the torch left Echuca and headed for Rochester.
