Phone: (03) 5482 1111The collection of negatives dates from the 1940s to 1990s.
Volunteers will scan, edit and index the photos and then read Riverine Herald articles on a microfilm reader screen to identify the subject of the photos and write basic information onto index cards.
The details of the photographs will give valuable insights into the life and times of Echuca and district.
The scanning project begins next month and will run two days a week for 26 weeks.
Volunteers will be given training in all aspects of the project.
The project will be at the society's museum at 1 Dickson St, Echuca.
Project manager Dot Hammond urged district volunteers who had an interest in heritage and photography to become involved in the project.
``Volunteers will play a vital role in preserving these fascinating photos and facts for current and future generations to enjoy and learn from,'' she said.
``They will have a rewarding opportunity to learn about indexing and local history and be part of an enthusiastic team of volunteers.''
The project has the support of the Victorian Government through the Community Support Fund and Public Records Office Victoria, Echuca Workers' and Services Club and the Riverine Herald.
