Mathoura hall celebrations

Friday, July 30, 2010

Mathoura's Murray Shire hall will celebrate its centenary on August 6 to 8.

Event organiser Heidi Glenn said the hall was the social hub of the town.

``It was the place where everyone met up before television came about,'' she said.

It has been used by schools for presentation nights to productions.

Businesses have used it for meetings and the general community has used it for balls, birthday parties, as a movie theatre and even as a restaurant.

The hall was designed by AC Fitz-Nead and contracted to WW Moore and Sons.

It took only four months to build and has become so special that it has been used for Anzac Day services.

``It's our hall, our heritage,'' Mrs Glenn said.

The celebrations will start with a civic reception on Friday at 4pm, where a heritage photo of the hall will be unveiled.

There will be a community time capsule and a silver trowel on display.

The trowel was presented to the shire president, Cr David Glenn, when the hall was built.

Other feature events include a movie night, a three-course dinner and a dance party.

All proceeds will go towards upgrading the hall to its original condition to encourage the community to make greater use of it.

``It is important to preserve and restore icons of a town's past,'' Mrs Glenn said.
